Crude Oil Silver and Gold Prices Higher On Dollar Mixed vs Euro and Yen

Commodities were higher today while the dollar gained against the yen but fell versus the euro (see commodity and forex tables below). Later in the day the currency rates changed while palladium jumped nearly five percent.

Investor optimism helped buttress stock prices in Asia, Europe and the United States Monday. Trading was light in the U.S. while many traders took the day off for Columbus Day.

A pledge from the Germans and French on Sunday to keep European banks afloat eased investor fears. Stocks soared, commodities soared and the euro rallied subsequent to the announcemen

Precious Metals

Gold advanced Monday after declining Friday. Analysts believed an improved economic outlook helped move money from money market accounts to commodities like gold.

December gold on the COMEX added $35.00 (+2.14%) to $1,670.80 a troy ounce (see survey #2 settle price chart below). Silver also climbed, up 99 cents (+3.18%) to $31.98 an ounce.

The ratio between the two metals tightened slightly to 52.2. Since the settle in New York, both gold and silver futures have been heading downward.

Platinum was up, but palladium was up even more. Jewelry made from palladium may be seeing a renaissance as Pamela Anderson and Kelly Osborne tout the metal over the heavy metals in a campaign in Marie Claire Magazine.

Precious metals were higher on the Tokyo Commodity Exchange (TOCOM). Gold prices climbed 50 yen (+1.24%) to ¥4,098 per gram. See our exclusive dollar / ounce and dollar / barrel – gallon conversions in the TOCOM chart below.

Energy Prices

Improving economic conditions could signal a higher demand for crude oil. Crude oil in the United States and Asia advanced Monday.

Light sweet crude oil on the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) popped $2.43 (+2.93%) to $85.41 a barrel. Brent crude on the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) jumped $3.07 (+2.90) to $108.95. The difference between the two benchmarks expanded to $23.54.

Coal and gasoline also climbed higher.
