Annual prices quoted include the Northwest Europe marker price, Japan steam and coking coal import prices, and the US Central Appalachian coal spot price index.
Coal prices except for the US Central Appalachian price are calculated as cif prices, where cif = cost + insurance + freight (average freight prices). The US Central Appalachian price is fob = free on board.
All prices are quoted in US dollars per tonne
Global coal production increased 6.3% (219 mtoe) with China (+9%) again accounting for two-thirds of global growth
Coal production grew robustly in the US and Asia but fell in the European Union. Among coal exporting countries, production rose to meet international as well as domestic demand.
Methodology
Coal production includes data for solid fuels only. Included in the hard coal category are bituminous and anthracite. The sub-bituminous coal includes lignite and brown coal.
In the coal production table, the units are in million tonnes oil equivalent (mtoe). The data can be downloaded from the Excel workbook in million tonnes.
World proved reserves of coal in 2010 were sufficient to meet 118 years of global production – by far the largest R/P ratio of any fossil fuel, but well below the 2000 R/P ratio of 210 years. Europe & Eurasia holds the largest regional coal reserves and has the highest regional R/P ratio

Non-OECD demand rose by 2.2 Mb/d – the highest annual growth on record in volumetric terms – just slightly outpacing the growth seen in 2004. Growth remained robust in China and the Middle East with Chinese consumption growing by 860,000 b/d or 10.4%. OECD oil consumption rose by 480 Kb/d – making 2010 the first year of annual OECD growth since 2005. Despite the increase, consumption in 2010 was still 3.6 Mb/d below the peak in 2005.
Oil consumption data includes inland demand plus international aviation, marine bunkers and oil products consumed in the refining process. Consumption of fuel ethanol and biodiesel is also included.
Annual changes and shares of total are calculated using million tonnes per annum figures rather than thousand barrels daily.
Data are supplied in both volume and weight measures....READ MORE
